Friends of the Homeless

History and Purpose

Friends of the Homeless was founded in January 1983 to provide a wide range of services, including housing, to help homeless adults and families move from dependency to self-sufficiency.

Services Provided

Friends of the Homeless, a program of Southeast, Inc., maintains six transitional housing units for families; the Parsons Avenue Apartments for 25 men; an emergency shelter with 130 beds for men; and Rebecca's Place, an emergency shelter for women with 47 beds.

Friends provides liaison programs for mental illness, legal consultation, chemical dependency, medical treatment, and a wide variety of employment services.

For almost 24 years, First Community Church members have been preparing and serving a hot meal to men at the East Main Street shelter each Monday evening throughout the year.

First Community Church's Mission Support

A Fourth Monday group has been providing one meal each month since March 1984. A First Monday group has been active since winter of 2000. Starting in the fall of 2002, women of the church have been preparing a meal for the women's shelter, Rebecca's Place, on the first and fourth Tuesdays.

In addition, First Community Church members help Friends of the Homeless by contributing basic necessities such as bedding and towels, toiletries, kitchenware, and mattresses.

A portion of the First Community Church Christmas offering goes to Friends of the Homeless.

Volunteer Service Opportunities through First Community Church

Individuals and groups are needed to feed the men at their emergency shelter and the women at Rebecca's Place. You may also help by donating basic necessities such as linens, towels, toiletries, and furnishings. Other opportunities for volunteer service include administrative assistance, facility maintenance, and community advocacy.
